League City Launches First-Ever Fright Fight Halloween Display Contest

The new citywide decorating competition was inspired by 10-year-old League City resident Caiden Navarro, who suggested a Halloween version of the City’s popular Light Fight.

League City residents who go all-out for Halloween now have a new reason to turn their front yards into something spooky, silly or spectacular.

The City has launched its first-ever Fright Fight, a community decorating contest that invites residents to create Halloween displays visible from the street and add their homes to an interactive citywide map.

The winner will receive an official “Fright Fight Winner” yard sign — along with neighborhood bragging rights.

Fright Fight Details

Entries must be located in League City.
Displays must be visible from the street.
Displays must be ready for judging by Wednesday, October 21.
The winner will be announced Friday, October 23.

The Idea Came From a 10-Year-Old League City Resident

Fright Fight did not begin in a City staff meeting.

According to League City, the idea came from 10-year-old Caiden Navarro, a fifth-grade student, cancer survivor and two-time League City Mayor for the Day.

After enjoying the City’s annual holiday Light Fight competition, Caiden suggested creating a Halloween version.

The City took the idea and turned it into a new community event.

A Resident Idea Becomes a Citywide Event

Caiden will not only see his idea come to life — he will also serve as the competition’s official judge.

He will evaluate entries based on creativity, originality, theme and overall presentation.

How Fright Fight Works

Residents who want to participate must submit their decorated home through the City’s Fright Fight program.

Approved entries will be placed on an interactive map that other residents can use to plan their own Halloween display tours around League City.

That means the competition doubles as a community guide for families looking for decorated houses to visit during October.

Displays can be spooky, funny, creative or themed. The City is encouraging residents to “go big” and make the competition their own.

Judging Takes Place Before Halloween

Residents should not wait until the final days of October to finish their displays.

All Fright Fight entries must be complete and ready for judging by October 21.

The winning home will be announced October 23, giving residents more than a week to visit the winner and other participating displays before Halloween night.

Another Reason to Explore League City Neighborhoods

The interactive map may end up being just as popular as the competition itself.

Instead of residents having to rely on word of mouth or social media to find elaborate Halloween displays, families will be able to use the City’s map to create their own driving route.

That approach is similar to League City’s annual holiday Light Fight and gives residents a reason to explore neighborhoods they might not normally visit.

October Is Filling Up With Community Events

Fright Fight joins an already busy League City October calendar.

Harvest Festival, the Plant Swap & Shop, Astronomy in the Park, the Spooktacular Bash, Day of the Dog and Cat and Music in the Historic District are all scheduled during the month.

Adding a neighborhood decorating contest creates an activity residents can enjoy throughout October rather than on a single event date.

A Small Idea With a Big Community Reach

Perhaps the most notable part of Fright Fight is how it started.

A League City student had an idea, shared it with the City, and watched that idea become an official community event.

For families participating this year, Fright Fight may simply be a fun Halloween decorating competition.

But it also serves as an example of how residents — even young ones — can help shape community traditions.

Talk of League City will continue highlighting the people, events and ideas that bring League City neighborhoods together.
